 | WHITE-TAILED SQUIRRELS WERE ADORABLE! May 2009 SHERIDAN, IND.—The first time you see them, you do a double-take. Fox squirrels are not supposed to have white tails in Sheridan. But a family of four was born in May 2009 in Sheridan Veterans Park. People were enthralled with the billowy-tailed anomaly, and their nest in a tree near the roadside brought bicycles, baby carriages, slow-moving cars and trucks…even runners and walkers craning to see the frisky babies forage for nuts and corn. This gift from the animal kingdom charmed Sheridan residents so much, that county newspapers even featured photographs to join us in disbelief. By season end, three white-tailed squirrels survived the road and have moved west to build homes in the older trees. There will be much to anticipate next spring. (Photos by Katie Bush.)
