Boxley Book - A Man with a Price on His Head

Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the George Boxley log cabin built in 1828 is the bookend on an even greater story. In a special effort to rekindle local history awareness, the Sheridan Historical Society has published the tale of a man who was among America's first abolitionists.

Boxley was inflamed, moved to the soul about vagaries of slavery. He stood on his own convictions that liberty and freedom were inalienable rights for everyone. His strong opinions drove his destiny. In his stand against the practices of human bondage in his beloved Virginia, Boxley was allegedly to have fomented a failed slave rebellion in 1816, imprisoned, broke jail and outran bounty hunters for 12 years. He found a wilderness hill in Indiana, set up a frontier farm and taught school.

We salute his sacrifices with a story that captures the drama.
