SHERIDAN, IND—The Sheridan Historical Society will host staff from the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology to introduce new grant programs like Preserve America and data about tax credit opportunities for the Sheridan community on Mon., Feb. 11, 6:30 p.m., at the Sheridan Public Library, 103 W. First St.

New opportunities are emerging for heritage development and preservation in the town following restoration of the 1828 George Boxley log cabin and designation of Sheridan’s downtown as a commercial historic district.

According to Steve Kennedy, assistant director of DHPA administration, grants and planning, "We are trying to spread the word about the Preserve America Program among communities that are actively engaged in heritage preservation activities. In addition, we will explain Historic Preservation Fund grants and state and federal rehabilitation investment tax credits -- two financial incentive programs specifically for local preservation projects. Utilizing these programs can help communities realize their vision for heritage preservation."

The Town of Sheridan and the Sheridan Historical Society received a Federal grant of $34,500 from the Historic Preservation Fund to restore the Boxley landmark after it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The cabin on Pioneer Hill in Sheridan Veterans Park was restored with a $34,500 grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund, which was administered by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology. The HPF grant was matched by $30,000 in gifts and grants assembled by the Sheridan Historical Society. Lead gifts were received from the Stephenson Family Foundation; Efroymson Fund, A CICF Fund; and the Hamilton County Convention & Visitors Bureau (HCCVB). Sheridan has been awarded $55,000 from the Hamilton County Destination Fund 2008 to begin phase two of its work on developing heritage tourism themes that would examine the potential of building a complex near the cabin that can house a Boxley Visitor Center, pioneer museum for collections of the Sheridan Historical Society, and a multi-purpose facility for the Town of Sheridan. Along with Sheridan Main Street and the Sheridan Monon Trail, that package can transform Sheridan into a heritage tourism destination.
