Boxley Cabin Restoration In Sheridan To Begin April 18
The Town of Sheridan anticipates physical restoration work on Boxley Cabin will begin in Spring 2007 and the project would be completed in late fall. Contractor bids were opened on Jan. 9, 2007, and Schwartz Construction, Geneva, Indiana, was accepted with the low bid of $92,900. In coordination with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, the Town of Sheridan will seek required approvals and finalize the contract while fundraising to increase the current cabin fund of $84,500. |
Sheridan Work Session Focuses On Feasibility For Heritage Structures SHERIDAN, IND.—Five panelists will listen to representatives and public presenters to gather ideas in a one-day design charette work session on Tues., May 15. They will be investigating opportunities for a series of new features adjacent to the Boxley Cabin: a George Boxley visitor center, a new Sheridan Historical Society museum facility and a multi-purpose hall. All could be new features in Sheridan Veteran’s Park. |
Cabin Restoration Progress
Indiana DNR's Department of Historic Preservation and Archaeology has approved Amos B. Schwartz and Schwartz Construction in Geneva, Indiana, to restore the 1828 George Boxley pioneer cabin in Sheridan for $90,900 and work will begin on April 18. The Sheridan Town Council selected the contract on Jan. 9 contingent on approval. The Town is the property landowner for the landmark. |
Rosenthal To Keynote Annual Society Dinner, Thurs., April 19
Ellen Rosenthal, president, Conner Prairie living history museum, will be the featured speaker for the Sheridan Historical Society Annual Dinner at the Sheridan Community Center on Apr. 19, 6:30 p.m. The heritage attraction in Hamilton County has donated some furnishings, including a rope bed and loom, for Boxley Cabin. George Boxley's grandson, Calvin F. Boxley, married William Conner's grandniece, Mary Conner --a linkage between that venue and Boxley's life in Sheridan. Hamilton County Destination Fund '07 Awards $48,000 To Advance Planning For Sheridan's Heritage Projects Thanks to the award of $48,000 from the Hamilton County Convention and Visitors Bureau, plus the special match funds provided by the Stephenson Family Foundation and JBS United, plans are to be completed by mid-summer. The grant is managed by the Town of Sheridan and the Sheridan Historical Society. Work has begun to formulate feasibility plans on several important projects that will result in heritage tourism for Sheridan and the actual creation of a package of heritage improvements that attract visitors. Elements include additional funding for Boxley Cabin, a visitor center to interpret the Boxley story, and a new museum for the collections in the Sheridan Historical Society museum. That work includes a multi-purpose facility in Sheridan Veteran's Park and initial work on a master plan for revitalization of Main Street. |
